Age-Friendly Emergency Department (AFED)

• Care designed for older adults to make the emergency department visit as comfortable as possible and avoid hospitalization whenever it is safe to do so
• Comfort items and activities that don’t involve medicine or medical treatments, like stuffed animal puppies, fidget aprons, coloring books, puzzles, books, magazines, and cardboard sewing toys
• Safe and personalized discharge plans for our patients when they leave the hospital.
• Connections to community resources and local organizations that support health and well-being at home
• Dedicated patient navigator and social worker who connect our older adults to their primary care providers and offer support
• Specially trained volunteers, every day of the week

• Do you have concerns with your memory or trouble thinking clearly?
• Do you need help with seeing, hearing, or walking?
• Are you hungry or thirsty, so we can offer food or drinks?
• Would you like to sit in a chair or take a short walk to feel more comfortable?
• Would you like a volunteer to keep you company?

Our Age-Friendly Emergency Department is accredited by The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and The Geriatric Emergency Department Collaborative (GEDC).
