Uncategorized @fil-ph Juneteenth – A Celebration of Freedom, Resilience, and Black Excellence June 16, 2025 A Note from our CEO, Dr. Susan Ehrlich This week we will be honoring Juneteenth — an important day in American history and a celebration of freedom, resilience, and Black excellence. I am honored to join in and recognize this day by acknowledging its importance to our staff and patients. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved people that they were finally free — more than two years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. It is a day that reminds us to never give up hope, and to always stand for equality and freedom. Over the years, Juneteenth has evolved into a vibrant celebration of Black and African American culture, history, and contributions. Across the country — and here in our city — you’ll find parades, music, storytelling, and community gatherings that center joy, pride, and the richness of heritage. It’s also a time to reflect and renew our commitment to equity and justice in healthcare — because disparities persist, and we have a unique responsibility to address them. Fewer than 7% of San Francisco’s population identifies as Black/African American (B/AA), 13% of our patients do. This highlights the disproportionate need B/AA San Franciscans have for our services and underscores our responsibility to ensure we’re truly meeting those needs. I am grateful for our B/AA colleagues for all the ways their leadership, innovation, compassion, and strength have shaped the care we provide and the future we are building together. From patient care to advocacy, education, research, and operations, our B/AA staff make an impact in every pillar of our True North and every corner of our hospital. As we recognize this important day, let us also remember that celebration is a powerful form of healing. I encourage everyone to take time to learn, honor, celebrate, support, and uplift. Here are a few local Juneteenth events you can attend: Hella Juneteenth Festival Thursday, June 19, Noon – 5 p.m. Oakland Museum of California 18th Annual Oakland Juneteenth Celebration & Street Festival Thursday, June 19, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Brockhurst St. (between Market St. and San Pablo Ave.), Oakland Third Annual Juneteenth Citywide Parade Sunday, June 22, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Market St. and Spear St. Most importantly, let this be part of our ongoing work to create an environment where every member of our team feels seen, valued, and empowered. As we commemorate Juneteenth, I want to thank our Black and African American staff—for your contributions, your brilliance, and your continued leadership. Your work elevates our True North goal of Equity and our core values of Thirst in Learning, Compassionate Care and Joy in Work. You inspire us every day. Wishing you all a wonderful week! Susan
